hi guys!
do you think I should email everyone on my mailing list with a free song from Unbalanced EP?
if yes, which one?

should I put it for free on myspace? or should I keep it to my exclusive mailing list only?

Would love to hear what you think!!

I think the ultimate goal is to get the song out to as many people as possible. I don't think giving one away hurts but, 3 of the 5 songs are already on myspace on the music player. I definitely think it would be nice to mail a track to the mailing list though. For sure. I would suggest "Thursday Song". Not sure if this helps you or not.

I think everyone will be VERY happy for the free gift but I do not think this is a good idea because:

1 - ultimately you want to make a living from your talent... And giving it away for free will not help.
2 - by doing so you will "preaching the converts" and therefore this will have little impact on bringing new fans.
3- "free" is often associated with "cheap" and this could possibly damage your image if the download link gets too widely distributed.

Just my two eurocents...

Unfortunately I have no better idea, at least for now... Maybe a combo of things? I will think about it and hopefully I will have a suggestion tomorrow.

I think that it is a good idea to give one free song.
It may also attract new fans. And the song "Thursday Song" is a good start with :)

As Todd said, there already are 3 of 5 on myspace...so maybe just a link to where they may be able to hear the new songs. Or, perhaps a free song to your mailing list would be just the incentive needed (with a sweet reminder) that there is still time to be a part of the new EP with a patron of the arts sponser donation.:)

hi guys!!
i don't think there is a harm of giving out one free song... I often get hooked on music if I get 1 free song, and if i like it, i often go buy more from iTunes and such....
i have about 5,000 emails on my mailing list, but many of them haven't been coming to the concerts or emailing (or ever coming to our awesome forum here).... so, maybe if they get my new free song, they'll get re-excited about the music. hopefully? :)

I guess I will weigh in on this topic, let me say that I am a believer in what you give out to the universe, will be returned to you three fold.

First I would ask what is your ultimate goal, is it to make a living and get you music heard or do you want your music out here and heard, while being able to support yourself. Second, is how do you attract new listeners and motivate your old fans. It is my understanding that in the old days, what an artist or their manager would do was take the new record to the local radio stations and hope that they would find a station manager or Dj who would be willing to play a song or two. Then if it got a good response from their listeners it would make it into the rotation. Unfortunately this was limited to listeners the radio station could reach. Now today with the internet you have the ability to reach a worldwide market of listeners as can be seen by the eclectic group here on this very forum. The question is how do you attract new listeners and fans while stimulating the old ones at the same time. If you have been following along on this message board long enough you know that there are about a half dozen Komrades that respond on a regular basis, with a couple more that join in from time to time. I will disagree that free means cheap, especially since what you are trying to do is get someone attention and introduce them to something they are unaware of.

When I was about twelve, thirteen some friends and I were walking home from the beach. We had stopped to check out an accident and we were standing in front of a local chicken place that had just opened. As we stood there the owner came out and handed us all these potatoes things and since that day we were all hooked. To this day when I go back home this is one of the places I make sure to stop at. Maybe we would have found this place sooner or later, but I guess what I am saying is that the owner didn’t wait for us to find him, but went out and made the effort to find his new customers.

I didn’t mean to get philosophical or all new age on you. But what I think I’m trying to say is, Marina follow what you think is best for you. Follow what you feel in your heart, listen to that little internal voice that has been guiding you and you will never go astray.

The Old Dawg. ;)

Ulf, I certainly don't mind a little philosophy:). You have made some good points and you never cease to amaze me with your wis(dawg)dom;)!!! I also agree that free does not always mean "cheap". As a matter of fact, FREE happens to be my favorite 4-letter word!
